What Do We Really Mean by Healing
by/margit cathrine moller

“First of all, I feel completely liberated from the emotions responsible for my overeating habits; so, no more craving for non-healthy foods such as sugar and starch, no more snacking all the time, no more excesses.

And all this, without feeling deprived. It's a completely new life for me! Now, it's natural to eat healthy and with smaller portions. I feel content, happy and so much alive! I have much more energy with the pleasure of walking every day!”

The above quote is from a testimonial of Jesse, one of my clients. I chose this to highlight something that I find essential in the work that I do. What do we really mean by healing? People come to me in order to be healed. But what does it really mean?

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines healing as: to make sound or whole; to restore to health; to cause (an undesirable condition) to be overcome; to restore to original purity or integrity, and to return to a sound state.

I like these definitions. I would like to focus on two things:

Healing is to make whole.

Although a lot of people consider healing as overcoming an injury, an illness or a disease, but those are part of the whole process of making whole. Yes, healing means the body goes back to being healthy and fit, but it also indicates wellness of the mind, the heart, and the spirit.

It used to be that doctors zeroed in on the physical aspect of healing, but more and more our medical schools and hospitals are seeing the relevance of wholistic health. We are now aware that the physical condition is but an “enfleshing” of the mind and the spirit. Real healing happens when all aspects of being are healed.

Healing is a restoration process.

We all started being whole. We all started in the pink of health. Yes, even those who are born with diseases. At one point, during the moment of conception of life, we were whole. What we do in healing is to help the person go back to this original state of wholeness.

And finally, healing ultimately is about reclaiming fullness of life.
As Jesse mentioned above, to be healed is to go back to enjoying life and to experience so much energy and pleasure every day.

Anyone can carry his burden, however hard, until nightfall. Anyone can do his work, however hard, for one day. Anyone can live sweetly, patiently, lovingly, purely, till the sun goes down. And this is all life really means.

Never make your home in a place. Make a home for yourself inside your own head. You'll find what you need to furnish it - memory, friends you can trust, love of learning, and other such things. That way it will go with you wherever you journey.
